First Grade Art

So with spring here we started to notice some new friends moving into the trees around our school.  BIRDS!
This was a spur of the moment project due to a flipped schedule at our school one day.  Many thanks to lostbuttonstudio.blogspot.com for pinning this cute idea on showing students how to create birds.

The first day we drew Momma and Pappa Birds

As well as some baby birds and eggs.
On day two we created bird houses for our bird families to live in.

The final class display!

We needed a small break from our Eric Carle project.  Our focus for this project is still shapes, only this time we are including letters as well.
For this project we will be using "Magic Paper" and black tempera paint to create fun warm weather inspired landscapes.

My Teacher's Exemplar
The shape we used for the tree trunk was a rectangle and we used the letters Y and W to create our trees branches.
Magic Paper- a.k.a Bleeding Tissue Paper
Some fun with our "Magic Paper".
Great Job!
There was one water bucket set up at each table and four students were able to use it.
Their lovely warm weather landscapes.

These bright colors were just amazing.
I love how I can show them one thing and the students are able to create so many different examples.

In our first grade class students read the book The Artist Who Painted a Blue Horse by Eric Carle.  We talked about how different artist express the same things but in different ways.  We looked at examples of different paintings of animals and the students had to identify the similarities and differences in how the different artists created the same thing.
The first graders will be creating their own collaged animals of different colors.
The class began by making a class-wide list of our favorite jungle and forest animals.
Circles, Ovals, and Rectangles, OH MY!

Cheetahs, turtles, and horses

A lot of turtle-lovers in this class.

  1. I hope you don't mind. I wrote a blog post about your bird and birdhouse lesson. My blog is about art sub lessons and I think this idea could easily be adapted for that. https://artsublessons.blogspot.com/2019/03/kindergarten-and-first-grade-art.html
